SEL Bioengineering is exploring how handheld pupillometry could help expedite the diagnostic process and reduce associated stress for families, with the goal of improving outcomes for children with autism. The team is currently working through FDA regulatory and compliance requirements.


About the Clinical Trial

SEL is sponsoring an FDA clinical trial called Effectiveness of the Autism Pupil Screen (APS) Detect Pupillometer for Identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Routine Healthcare. This trial will examine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational handheld pupillometer designed to help healthcare professionals screen for ASD in children ages two to five years old in routine well-child exams. Development Team

The development team is led by Principal Scientist, Dr. Georgina Lynch, whose research focuses on early identification of autism using pupillometry and eye tracking technology to improve screening practices by health care providers. With a background in neuroscience, speech-language pathology, and a 20-year history working with the autism community, she brings the technical expertise and clinical understanding required to lead the innovation of SEL Bioengineering. The team consists of ten associate and senior engineers with expertise in research and development, image processing, optics, precision signal detection, bioengineering, software development, UI/UX design, and quality assurance. 

The APS Detect Handheld Pupillometer is not yet cleared for safety and effectiveness by the FDA.
